What size Christmas tree fits an 8 foot ceiling?

For an 8 foot ceiling, get a 7 ft tree if you're using a tree topper and a 7.5 ft tree if you're not. The math is ceiling height, minus the stand if the tree's listed height doesn't include it, minus your topper, minus a couple of inches of breathing room. Measure your topper before you buy the tree, because a tall star can push you down to 6.5 ft.

Most of us have 8 foot ceilings, and the most common tree size you’ll see in stores is 7.5 ft. So it sounds like a perfect match! Then you get the tree home, put your star on top, and it’s bent sideways against the ceiling. (I’ve seen it in so many photos, and I’ve done it myself.) Today I’m sharing the easy math I use so you can pick a tree that actually fits your room!

For an 8 ft ceiling, get a 7 ft tree if you use a topper, and a 7.5 ft tree if you don’t.

The Math

An 8 ft ceiling is 96 inches. From that, subtract:

  1. The stand, but only if the tree’s listed height doesn’t already include it. Some brands measure from the bottom of the stand and some measure just the tree. Look for “height includes stand” on the listing. If it doesn’t say, I assume the stand adds a few inches.
  2. Your topper. Measure it! Most stars and finials are around 6 to 12 inches tall. Once it’s on, the bottom of it slides down over the top tip of the tree, so you lose a little less than its full height.
  3. About 2 inches of breathing room, so the topper isn’t scraping paint and you can actually get it on and off.

If you want to keep it simple, leave 12 inches between the tree and the ceiling if you have a topper, and 6 inches if you don’t. On an 8 ft ceiling, that’s a 7 ft tree or a 7.5 ft tree.

Ceiling Height Chart

8 ft7 ft7.5 ft6.5 to 7 ft
9 ft8 ft8.5 ft7.5 to 8 ft
10 ft9 ft9.5 ft8.5 to 9 ft

I kept the real tree column a little shorter on purpose. Real trees aren’t measured as exactly as artificial ones, the stand raises the trunk a few inches, and the top can be taller than it looked on the lot. You can saw a couple of inches off the bottom of a real trunk if it’s too tall, but I’d rather not do that on the living room floor! So it’s better to go a little short.

Measure the Actual Spot

Don’t use the ceiling height from your house listing. Measure right where the tree will stand, because a few things can change it:

  1. Ceiling fans and light fixtures. Even if the tree technically fits under the fan, the topper will hit a blade the first time somebody turns it on. Move the tree, or turn off the fan at the wall for the season.
  2. Sloped or vaulted ceilings. Measure at the exact spot the trunk will be, not the highest point of the room.
  3. Crown molding and beams. These take inches off right where a tree usually goes, in a corner.

Don’t Forget Width

Height is the question everybody asks, but width is what makes a tree feel too big for the room. A full tree is roughly 55 to 65 percent as wide as it is tall, so:

Tree heightFullSlimPencil
6.5 ft43 to 51 inabout 30 to 38 inabout 24 to 28 in
7 ft46 to 55 inabout 30 to 40 inabout 26 to 30 in
7.5 ft52 to 60 inabout 30 to 42 inabout 28 to 32 in

Slim and pencil sizes vary a lot by brand, so use these as a starting point and check the base diameter on the listing.

This is how I figure out how wide I can go:

Step 1.

Move the furniture to where it will be for the season first.

Step 2.

Measure the open floor where the tree will stand, from the wall to whatever is next to it.

Step 3.

Subtract 12 inches. That’s the widest tree you want.

Step 4.

Make sure you still have a clear path about 3 feet wide past it. If the tree pinches a walkway, the bottom branches get bumped every single day and ornaments end up on the floor.

If you’re putting up a real tree, keep it at least 3 feet away from heat sources like a fireplace, space heater or heat vent. It dries out faster there and it’s a fire risk.

When a Slim Tree Is Better

If your height works but the width doesn’t, go slim instead of going shorter. A slim 7.5 ft tree under an 8 ft ceiling with a bow topper gives you that tall, festive look without taking over half the living room. It’s what I’d pick for an apartment or a small living room every time!

For really tight spots, a pencil tree tucks in next to a couch or into a corner. I love this pre-lit pencil tree, and this flocked pencil tree honestly barely needs ornaments. I have more small room ideas in how to decorate your small space this Christmas.

If you’re still deciding between real, artificial, pre-lit or flocked, start with how to choose the perfect Christmas tree and then come back to size.

My Best Tip

Measure your topper before you buy the tree! That one number decides between 7 and 7.5 ft on an 8 ft ceiling, and it’s the thing almost everybody forgets.

How tall are the ceilings where your tree goes? I hope this helped you pick the right size! If your tree fits perfectly this year, be sure to post on Instagram and tag me @sugardesignco because I love seeing the beautiful decor y’all create!

Questions I get asked

Will a 7.5 ft tree fit under an 8 ft ceiling?
Usually, but only with a flat topper or none at all. If the 7.5 ft height includes the stand, you've got 6 inches left, which is enough for a bow tucked into the top but not a standing star. If the stand isn't included, you may only have an inch or two.
Does Christmas tree height include the stand?
It depends on the brand. Some measure from the bottom of the stand to the tip and some measure the tree only. Look for 'height includes stand' in the listing, and if it doesn't say, assume it doesn't and subtract a few inches.
What size tree for a 9 foot ceiling?
An 8 ft tree with a topper or 8.5 ft without one. A 7.5 ft tree also looks great under a 9 ft ceiling and leaves plenty of room for a big topper.
How wide is a 7 foot Christmas tree?
A full 7 ft tree is usually around 46 to 55 inches wide at the bottom. Slim versions run about 30 to 42 inches, and pencil trees can be 30 inches or less.
What size real tree should I buy for an 8 foot ceiling?
I'd stick to 6.5 to 7 ft. Real trees aren't sized as precisely as artificial ones, the stand lifts the trunk a few inches, and the top leader is often taller than you expect once it's standing up straight.
